Background of the study
Indigenous environmental management practices have long played a crucial role in preserving natural resources and promoting sustainable living in many Nigerian communities, including Yewa South Local Government Area. These traditional methods, rooted in indigenous knowledge and cultural heritage, offer a holistic approach to natural resource management that modern practices often overlook (Afolabi, 2023). Communities in Yewa South have historically utilized indigenous practices to manage forests, water resources, and land sustainably, demonstrating resilience in the face of environmental challenges. Recent studies reveal that integrating indigenous wisdom with contemporary environmental management strategies can yield more sustainable outcomes (Bassey, 2024). However, rapid modernization and external development pressures threaten the continuity of these practices, leading to environmental degradation and loss of cultural identity. The appraisal of these indigenous methods provides valuable insights into sustainable practices that can be adapted and scaled. Understanding the relevance and limitations of indigenous practices is crucial for developing comprehensive environmental policies that respect cultural heritage while addressing modern environmental challenges (Ogunleye, 2025).
Statement of the problem
In Yewa South, traditional environmental management practices are under threat due to modernization and unsustainable resource exploitation. The erosion of indigenous knowledge has resulted in a decline in sustainable environmental practices, leading to increased degradation of natural resources. This research is required to document and evaluate the effectiveness of these traditional methods before they are lost.
